Today marks a landmark moment: our Richmond Griffins High School Girls Rugby program officially kicks off its Fall Sevens season with practice at Dorey Park. This is the first of many steps in our active commitment to growing girls’ rugby in Richmond.

Sevens Season at a Glance (2025)

  • Practice begins: Tonight, August 18, at 7:00 PM @ Dorey Park

  • Season format: Rugby 7s — fast, fun, and fiercely competitive

By contrast, our Boys and Co-Ed programs won’t begin until the Spring of 2026, affirming our strategic focus on building a strong girls’ foundation this fall.

Why Girls Rugby Matters Now

Thanks to the trailblazing efforts of the USA Women’s Sevens team, youth players nationwide are inspired like never before. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, the U.S. women’s team captured bronze, securing the first Women’s Olympic medal in rugby with a buzzer-beating finish by Alex “Spiff” Sedrick. Her 94‑yard sprint and game‑winning kick epitomized athletic heroism—and has ignited a generation of girls to pick up the ball.

Today’s kickoff is more than practice—it’s our nod to that momentum and our promise to youth athletics: girls matter, and their game matters.

Game Plan for the Fall Sevens Season

  • Coaches Rudy Miller & Alyssa Darling are leading the charge — welcome to the Griffins family!

  • We’re actively coordinating compliance, schedule planning, and host sites with the Chesapeake Conference. A formal overview has been shared, including compliance steps, availability tracking, and match hosting details.

  • The competitive season will span 10–11 weeks, mostly on Sundays, starting September 21 and wrapping in mid-to-late November.

  • Mark your calendars: The Richmond Griffins are tentatively set to host matches on October 5th.

  • Updates will be on this website, via TeamSnap, and our coaches/Admin Facebook group.
