FIT Touch Rugby (U6–U10)

The Richmond Griffins Fit Touch program is a co-ed, non-contact version of rugby designed for our youngest players, ages 5 to 9 (U6 through U10). It’s the perfect entry point for children to learn the fundamentals of the game in a fun, inclusive, and safe environment. Players learn how to pass, stay behind the ball carrier, support their teammates, and apply basic strategy on the field.

Each age group builds on foundational skills, and gameplay emphasizes movement, teamwork, and awareness. The focus is on development and enjoyment—there are no tryouts, and all players are welcome regardless of experience or skill level.

We offer two seasons:

  • Spring (March–May): Two practices per week and Saturday match days across the region.

  • Summer (June–July): Two practices per week and Saturday match days across the region.

Players use a Size 3 rugby ball. The U6 and U8 teams play 5v5 and follow Rugby Virginia’s Fit Touch Modifications, including rules like the 6-touch possession limit and mandatory passes from the scrumhalf.

Middle School Tackle Rugby (U12 & U14)

Our U12 and U14 programs offer a co-ed, introductory experience to tackle rugby in a structured and age-appropriate environment. These levels are designed for athletes aged 10 to 13 who are ready to take the next step beyond touch rugby.

  • U12 plays 10-a-side rugby in the Spring and 7's rugby in the Summer.

  • U14 advances to full 15-a-side rugby in the Spring and also plays 7’s rugby during the Summer.

The emphasis remains on safety, inclusion, and player development. Coaches are trained in USA Rugby's SafeTackling guidelines, and players are introduced to contact in progressive, confidence-building drills. We pride ourselves on giving every player meaningful playing time—there are no cuts, and athletes of all shapes and sizes are welcome.

Players use a Size 4 rugby ball, and matches follow Rugby Virginia competition rules.

High School Boys Rugby (U16 & 18U)

The Richmond Griffins High School Boys Rugby program is a competitive, development-focused opportunity for young men ages 14 to 18. Divided into U16 and 18U squads, the program welcomes athletes of all experience levels—from first-time players to seasoned competitors.

In the Spring season, players compete in 15-a-side rugby, the traditional format of the game, facing top clubs from across Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic. During the Summer, the focus shifts to 7’s rugby, a fast-paced, high-energy version played in tournaments throughout the region.

Our coaching staff includes USA Rugby-accredited coaches who prioritize skill development, game understanding, and physical conditioning. Players learn how to tackle safely, execute set plays, and grow as leaders both on and off the field. Rugby is one of the only sports that offers meaningful roles for athletes of all sizes and skill sets, and our inclusive team environment ensures every player finds their place.

This program is ideal for athletes looking to:

  • Compete at a high level

  • Explore collegiate rugby opportunities

  • Develop strength, fitness, and teamwork in a structured, values-driven setting

High School Girls Rugby

The Richmond Griffins High School Girls Rugby program offers a dynamic, empowering opportunity for young women ages 14 to 18 to learn, play, and compete in one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. All high school players join a single team that competes together throughout the year.

In the Fall, the team competes in a dedicated 7’s rugby season, playing fast-paced, short-sided matches that emphasize speed, agility, and decision-making. In the Spring, the girls take on the traditional 15-a-side format, facing other high school programs across the Mid-Atlantic.

No experience is necessary to join. Players are taught the fundamentals through progressive, intentional coaching, and are supported by a staff of experienced male and female coaches who foster a competitive, encouraging environment. Our program helps young women develop confidence, resilience, and leadership—on and off the field.

Whether your goal is to:

  • Try a new sport in a supportive community

  • Build strength and fitness for other sports

  • Compete for a spot on a regional or collegiate team

…there is a place for you in Griffins Girls Rugby.
